LIFE COACHING

Politicians and Life Coaching

Feb 14, 2023

In the same way that Biden's age and physical health have received much attention, Donald Trump's mental health was a hot topic during his presidency. Everyone's greatest fear was realized on January 6 when Trump made some remarks that many believe provoked riots and the storming of the U.S. Capital.

Just as an airplane pilot's physical and psychological health should be of great concern, so should the mental health of our politicians. Some politicians come into office already suffering from mental health, and some develop issues along the way. The thing that matters most is that they get the needed help and support from the people who put them in office.

This is why I applaud the bold actions of Sen. John Fetterman, who checked himself into a Washington hospital for treatment of clinical depression. His family shared that Fetterman has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, but it only became severe in recent weeks.

Public figures, including our politicians, are under significant pressure to perform their duties and often face intense scrutiny, criticism, and public opinion. The stress and demands of such positions can significantly impact their mental well-being, and it is essential to address these concerns for their overall health and the welfare of the public they serve.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1 in 4 people worldwide will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point. This means that politicians are no exception to this reality. However, a stigma is often associated with mental health conditions, leading to a lack of acknowledgment, support, and resources.

Some politicians have attempted to address this issue and make this hidden reality public. For example, some have spoken openly about their mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and addiction. By doing so, they have helped to reduce the stigma surrounding these conditions and increase awareness. Still, we have a long way to go.

I would offer that there should be no shame associated with politicians addressing their mental needs. But, at the same time, I also understand that the public is not sensitive to politicians addressing their concerns.

I have politicians as clients, and as a professional coach, my standard practice is keeping my client list and our sessions confidential. Politicians are no different. In fact, when I see both pastors and politicians, I am mindful of the fallout that could occur from any exposure of them seeking help and the impact it could have on the community they serve. This is a horrible reality, but the unfortunate reality is that people are immature. Some people would make life uncomfortable for these politicians if they knew they were conversing with a life coach. This is unacceptable, but it is our current reality.

I am dedicated in my commitment to help, aid, and assist those that support us.
