Connecting with the Client
Connecting with a client is important for a successful coaching experience.
When connecting, a few very important practices must be followed. A good coach must understand how to set boundaries.
Healthy boundaries are important because they help to foster trust and maintain professionalism. Boundaries are also important because they establish what a coach is and what a coach is not. Coaches must ensure that they help clients to understand that they are not therapists. If it should ever appear that therapy is needed, coaches should encourage their clients to seek that type of specialized help.
In addition to boundaries, coaches have to be sure to conduct themselves in an ethical manner. It is critical for clients first to understand the coaching process, all of the fees associated with the service, and most importantly, the confidential nature of each session. Ethics and boundaries are very important to the coaching profession in order to help build and maintain trust.
One of my initial goals when coaching is to build trust and rapport with the coaches. Rapport is basically a harmonious relationship. It is a relationship of mutual trust and respect. I build rapport by practicing active listening, soulful listening, reflective listening, and spiritual listening. Listening is essential. However, a connection can not be fully made unless I share some of myself.
When I talk to a client, I am generally transparent as possible concerning things about myself. I usually don't offer many details if it involves others, as I would never betray anyone else’s confidence. I may share some things about myself to help clients understand that we are all humans, and I never want to give the impression that I am perfect. Nevertheless, I am mindful that coaching should be client-centered and not focused on the coach.
Lastly, I use humor. I tend to find a humorous side in many situations, but I only use humor when appropriate. I have found that even the most stern, most stiff, and meanest person will loosen up after a dose of my light sarcasm and dry sense of humor.
I love coaching, and so far, it has been a mutually beneficial and enjoyable experience for both me and my clients.
